Does Your Gas Furnace Need Servicing?
No matter how well you take care of your gas furnace, normal wear and tear will eventually stress the components of your system and cause them to malfunction or break.
Here are some signs that your furnace may be in need of repair:
- Your energy bills are going up without any other explanation
- Your house never really gets to the temperature you set on the thermostat
- You hear strange noises coming from your furnace
- You are constantly having to adjust your thermostat to stay comfortable
- You notice weird smells coming from your furnace, especially if it smells like rotten eggs
- The pilot light on your furnace has yellow flames
- There are hot and cold spots throughout your house
- Your furnace is short cycling or struggling to stay on
- Your carbon monoxide alarm keeps going off
What to DIY
Furnace repair isn’t a DIY scenario, but there are a few things that you can do on your own before calling for repair services to see if they resolve the problem, like:
- Checking and cleaning the filters. Take your filters out and either clean or replace them. This should be done at least monthly. If your heater starts working properly after this, the filters were likely so clogged or blocked that it was preventing proper airflow to your furnace.
- Changing the batteries on your thermostat. If your thermostat is showing an error message or it’s been a while since you updated the batteries, try a new set. When your thermostat isn’t able to communicate with your furnace, your furnace won’t operate properly. This can masquerade as a problem with the furnace itself.
- Flipping your circuit breaker. If your furnace won’t turn on at all, try flipping the circuit breaker. The circuit may have become overloaded at night or during a storm and flipped the breaker without your knowledge.
If taking these steps does not fix the issue, McClaren Heating & Air can help. Just call (781) 447-0136 and one of our experienced service technicians will come to you.
What to Expect When We Arrive
We respond right away to repair calls and work quickly to diagnose and mitigate the problem. When we come to your home, our team will:
- Test your system to determine what’s wrong. We will check how your system works and how you’re using your system with a series of diagnostic assessments designed to identify the problem.
- Inform you of your repair options. Depending on the issue, there may be more than one option to get your system back online or otherwise solve the problem. Our veteran South Shore gas furnace technicians will go over what you can do and how much it will cost so you can decide which option fits best. It may be better to replace your gas furnace rather than to keep repairing it and our team will walk you through the process of updating your system if that’s the case.
- Order parts if needed. If specialty or replacement parts are needed to fix your furnace, we will order these and have them shipped right away.
- Repair your furnace. Once the issue is identified and we have any parts that were ordered, a technician will make the repair and get your heater restored, usually that same day.
Answer your important questions. When repairs are finished, we take the time to answer any questions you may have or show you how to work the new components of your system. Our goal is to make sure you’re confident in your service before we leave.
